WHAT ARE SAPPHIRES?
means blue stone (although that was apparently meant to describe another blue stone
lapis lazuli and not the gem we know today). However there may an even closer link to
Asia. Some linguists suggest the word is derived from Sanskrit ----sanipriya,which
literally means "sacred to Saturn" and which refers to a dark precious stone.
Sapphires belong to the corundum family of minerals. While blue may be the most
popular and well known, these gemstones come in a variety of colors including, pink
yellow, brown and green and are known as fancy sapphires. Rubies are actually
red Sapphires.
But it is the blue sapphires, ranging from rich royal blue to a light,pale baby blue
colour that have captured the public's imagination. A major appeal of these gems is
their beautiful velvety colour.
Unlike diamonds, sapphires are harder to come by. While sapphires can be found
in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe, fine quality sapphires are only found in
three places on the entire planet:" Myanmar, Srilanka and Madagascar". Its this
rarity that adds to their lustrous appeal. " High quality sapphires with good saturation,
even colour and intensity are quite rare and very difficult to locate". Different sapphire
cuts are Princess, Cushion, Oval, Radiant, Round and Emerald.
STAR SAPPHIRES
Some of the most famous sapphires in history have been star sapphires, an even
rarer form of the precious stone. Fine, needle-like inclusions in the gem stone give
an appearance of a star within the jewel, an optical effect known as 'Asterism', hence
the name. Both the star of India and Black star of Queensland have a long history.At 563 carats, the star of India is probably the most famous star sapphire in the
world. It was discovered 300 years ago in SriLanka and at one time was owned by
the American financier J.P.Morgan. He donated the blue beauty to the American
Museum of Natural History. where it is currently housed.
A more tortured and scandalous history surrounds the Black Star of Queensland.
At 733 carats, it is one of the largest known sapphires in the world discovered in
Australia. The treasured jewel was worn by singer/actress Cher in the early 70's and
displayed at museums in the United States and Canada.

Sapphires have long been associated with royalty and romance. They have been
used in engagement rings by royal families and the rich and powerful for centuries.
Sapphires also feature prominently in the British Crown Jewels. The most famous
of the crowns, the Imperial State Crown, traditionally worn during the state Opening
of Parliament, incorporates two large blue gemstones, the Stuart sapphire and
St Edward's sapphire. Princess Anne also had a sapphire engagement ring when
she married her first husband. Queen Elizabeth II owns several treasured pieces,
including the Prince Albert brooch, a large oval sapphire surrounded by 12 diamonds,once owned by Queen Victoria.
